Storage & Security Tips For Your Caravan During The Winter
The winter months can be very challenging for caravan owners as the variations in temperature and weather conditions can suddenly change, putting your caravan at risk of potential damage when it is not in use.
We've compiled a comprehensive list of things that you can do to ensure that no matter where it is stored, your caravan will be safe and secure and in tip-top shape ready for the next season's touring.
Storage
Usually there isn't a vast amount of choice in the matter of storage when it comes to caravans, but there are certain steps that you can take to ensure that your caravan gets as much protection from the elements as possible.
When thinking about storage, most people consider a location that is safe from the cold of the winter. While this is a legitimate concern that might end up saving you money and trouble, cold is not the only potentially damaging thing!
Damp
Damp storage conditions can lead to a build up of mould inside your caravan that is difficult to get rid of and might cause unpleasant persisting smells. It is important to check on your caravan regularly and to air it out at least twice during the cold season to protect the inside from bad smells and damage.
Our top tip is to use a dry bag while your caravan is in storage. This will help absorb moisture and keep the interior of your caravan safe. The great thing about dry bags is that they are completely reusable! They are able to absorb about 75% of their own weight in water and can be regenerated in an electric oven at home. It usually takes about 2-3 months before it needs to be dried, depending on weather conditions.
Created especially for caravans and motorhomes, this product doesn't contain silica gel, making it harmless and cost-efficient (about 1kg of compound can dehumidify 10 cubic meters).
Exterior protection
If you are planning on keeping your caravan parked outside your home during the winter make sure that you have an adequate cover for it. Choose a cover that is UV stable and breathable to encourage air flow and minimize the formation of mould and condensation that might damage the inside of your caravan.
Also, try to avoid parking your caravan under trees during the winter. Falling branches during storms, snow fall and bird droppings can cause damage to its exterior that are hard to fix!
Vermin
Make sure that you periodically check the state of your caravan and clean it thoroughly at least once during the winter to deter vermin from nesting inside. Rats and bugs can cause damage to surfaces or electrical wiring. If you plan on leaving it in a special storage site take some time checking their policy on vermin and pest control to avoid any unpleasant situations!
Remember to put plugs on your shower tray, kitchen sink and washroom basin to protect your caravan from unwanted pests and other external factors.
Frost damage
If you live in a particularly cold area that is prone to sub zero temperatures it is vital to make sure that all the water has been drained from the pipes to prevent freeze damage. We recommend the Floe system to help you empty every last drop of water from the pipework of your caravan and help keep it protected.
Security
Caravans are valuable goods that can be an appealing target to potential thieves. It's important to take all the necessary precautions to care for your caravan when it is not in use to prevent a theft from happening.
Whether you are storing your caravan at home or in a designated storage site, make sure to remove all valuable items from it before you tuck it away for the winter. These items include radios, Tvs, batteries and soft furnishings. Some furnishings can be costly to replace and by taking them away you will make your caravan less appealing to thieves.
Install alarms in visible places and make sure to check up on the batteries regularly. If you are storing your caravan at home, a security pole is a good and relatively inexpensive way of keeping it safe. Wheel clamps are also great security options as wrongdoers will have a very difficult time removing them and potentially stealing your caravan.
