Self Isolating In A Caravan - 18 Ways To Stay Sane
A caravan is one of the smallest living areas you can get, so having to live in one during the current outbreak can't be easy. Which is why we have compiled a list of activities and jobs which you can do to make your life easier during this tough time. Here's our:
18 Ways To Stay Sane While Self Isolating In Your Caravan Or Motorhome
1. Relocate if you can!
I'm guessing that this one isn't an option, giving that you're reading this list, but if you are able to, try and relocate. Staying in cramped spaces for long periods of time, can have a negative mental impact on us, so moving to a bigger space can help to avoid this. However, there are definitely ways to stay positive in a small environment such as a caravan, so let's take a look at some of them!
2. Keep your caravan as clean and tidy as possible
Tidy home, tidy mind! Make sure that your caravan is the best possible version of itself. If you are living in an absolute tip, it is bound to make you feel unhappy. But if your living area looks good, you will have a sense of accomplishment, and it will make your mindset that much more positive. Cleaning and organising will also help you pass the time.
3. Have a clear out
Spring clean anyone? It is that time of the year, and with all of this spare time on your hands, you may as well put it to good use. Turf out those cupboards and under bed boxes and get rid of anything which you don't need anymore. A good rule of thumb is, if you haven't used it in the last year, get rid! It is a good idea to be brutal with this one since you don't have much space in a caravan as it is.
4. If you are working from home, set up a work station
It is difficult to get motivated when working from home at the best of times, but when you don't have much space, it's even worse. It's easy to get int the habit of setting up your laptop in bed or on the couch, but this isn't good for your body or your mind. So create a designated area specifically for work. This should give you an obvious line between work and personal time. If you have somewhere to put your work gear as well, even better!
5. Find reasons to get dressed up
This is aimed more at the girlies, but hey it can also go for the men if they so please, no discrimination here! Organise a 'night in' video chat or a romantic meal with your partner and use it as an excuse to go and get dressed up. But on some makeup and your best frock/suit, do your hair and make yourself feel good. Looking good definitely makes you feel good, so try and put in some effort every now and then.
6. Go outside
Whether it's sitting on your doorstep or going for your daily exercise once a day, try to get some form of fresh air, even if it's just 5 minutes. It will make you feel more in tune with the outside world, even in these tough circumstances. Just make sure to social distance if you are going out to exercise.
7. Plan your days
It's so easy to get into a habit of not getting dressed, putting makeup on, doing your hair, showering and other things which are usually a part of your normal daily routine. This is absolutely fine every once in a while, but try not to do it every day. Not only is it not healthy and can make all of your days blend into one, but it will also make it so much harder to get back into a routine when you get back to work. So plan what you are going to do each day and get the most out of your days .... but make sure you leave time for winding down as well!
8. Start a new hobby and make time for existing hobbies
Maybe you're a poet and you don't know it, or maybe you'd enjoy doing some jigsaw puzzles, puzzle books, reading, writing, sewing, crafts, or learning a new instrument ... there are lists and lists of hobbies which you can take part in indoors, so try something new today.
9. Celebrate the small wins
So you may be feeling down and out at the moment, which is completely understandable, and believe me, you aren't alone. You might be feeling like you aren't achieving anything at the moment, but you are! Just the fact that you are getting out of bed is an achievement, as well as showering, washing up, housework and all of the other little things you manage to do each day. So make sure you see these as achievements and celebrate them!
10. Start a diary
It's true that the times we are currently living in are very strange and a lot would say scary, but we are also living through something which possibly won't happen again during our (or our childrens) lifetimes. Keeping a diary of what you've been doing, how you're feeling, who you've talked to etc. Could help you through things now, but they will also be something amazing for future generations to look back on!
11. Binge watch some of those TV shows
Okay, so not the healthiest option on this list, but people are in this mindset nowadays where they constantly need to be doing something. So I'd like to say, it's okay to take time for yourself, especially during this time. So put your feet up, order a pizza and watch that TV show which you have been meaning to watch for the last 3 years, but never gotten around to!
12. Sing, dance, laugh and smile
You need to spend time laughing and smiling, otherwise you will go insane, or I know I would! So watch or listen to some comedy. Being in a caravan you don't have neighbours who will complain about your hyena laugh, wailing or noisy tap dancing, so make the most of it and indulge in some karaoke, and dancing. Fun fact, singing burns 136 calories per hours, laughing burns 120 and dancing can burn 200 and 800 ... just saying.
13. Avoid conflict
In the current situation, we are obviously trying to stay inside as much as possible. So where you can, avoid any conflict with the people who you are living with, especially since you are living in a very small space with very few rooms to escape to. Peace and harmony go a long way in these situations!
14. Buy an awning
If you don't already have one, an awning is the perfect way to give you a little more space, and kind of feel like you're spending time outdoors. They are super versatile too, watch a movie, create a workspace, exercise or create a play area for the kids.
15. Create an exercise space
Caravans can get quite cramped, so if you can't create a space for exercising inside the caravan, then utilise your awning or outdoor area. Most caravan parks have a small amount of space outside each of the caravans which is the perfect place to do some yoga, meditation or other forms of exercise.
16. Make a bucket list
So one of the trends online during all of this has been writing down the things which you want to do, but can't at the moment and put them in a jar, so that you can tick them off one by one once we are back to normal. This idea is great! But another idea is to write a bucket list of all of the things which you would like to do in your lifetime, whether that's visiting a certain country, meeting a celebrity, or even something as simple as learning to juggle, which you could work on doing whilst in isolation.
17. Make a list of positives about staying at home
Being able to do a wash load on your lunch break, not wearing makeup, more time to catch up on TV shows, not having to see that annoying person who you don't get on with at work every single day ... these are just a few positives of staying at home and I'm sure you can relate. So when you are feeling down about not being able to go out and party, just think of the positives and write them down!
18. Stay connected
We're all hearing that isolation can be a lonely time for everyone and it has never been more important to stay connected with friends and family, so make sure you do just that. We are extremely fortunate to be experiencing this pandemic in a hugely technological time, so utilise it! Video chats, telephone calls and multiplayer online games are all great ways to keep in touch with your loved ones.
